About Mongkol Group
A Quiet Corner for Financial Thinking
We were founded in Bangkok with a single purpose: to offer adults at life's mid-chapter a place to read, discuss, and reflect on money — without anyone trying to sell them something while they do it.
Back to HomeHow We Came to Be
Mongkol Group grew out of a small reading circle that met on Saturday mornings in the Chatuchak district of Bangkok. The original participants — all professionals in their forties and fifties — had noticed that most available financial education was designed either for beginners or for people with substantial investable assets. Neither category described them particularly well.
What they wanted was something less prescriptive: a space to examine long-run market data, to hear how households in comparable situations had approached similar questions, and to keep their own considered notes over time. When one of the circle's facilitators, Khun Somchai Thanacharoen, was asked to formalise the sessions, the name Mongkol Group was chosen — mongkol meaning auspicious, fortunate in the sense of being well-considered rather than merely lucky.
The group has operated from the same rooms on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road since 2019. Programmes have been refined through several cohorts of adult learners. The approach has remained consistent: small groups, careful source material, and a facilitator whose role is to keep the conversation open rather than to steer it toward any particular conclusion.
We do not sell financial products. We are not registered investment advisers. We are educators, in the plainest sense of the word: people who believe that adults who have spent two or three decades managing money deserve access to serious, unhurried conversation about it.
Our Purpose
To offer adults at 40+ a structured, non-commercial space for developing genuine financial literacy — through reading, discussion, and patient observation.
Our Method
Small groups. Careful source material drawn from regional markets. A facilitator who asks questions rather than gives answers. Confidential by design.
Our Commitment
We will never sell products in a session, recommend specific securities, or accept commission from financial institutions. The sessions exist for the participants, not for us.
The Facilitators
Our facilitators bring backgrounds in economics, adult education, and financial journalism — not sales.
Somchai Thanacharoen
Founding Facilitator
Spent seventeen years in financial journalism before turning to adult education. Leads the market history programme and edits the monthly almanac prompt sheets.
Natnicha Phuangthong
Programme Facilitator
Background in household economics and adult learning design. Responsible for the case study library used in The Households of Friends programme.
Aroon Watthanasit
Research & Content
Former lecturer in economics at Chulalongkorn University. Compiles the source data and reading lists for all three programmes, with particular focus on Thai market history.
How We Maintain Quality
Our standards are not formal certifications but considered commitments that each programme must meet before we invite participants.
Source Material Review
All reading materials and data sources are reviewed before each new cohort. Where a source is dated or context has shifted, we update or replace it.
Participant Privacy
Personal information collected at registration is used only for programme administration. Nothing shared in session is attributed externally. Personal documents remain with participants.
Group Size Limits
We cap each session group at twelve participants. When demand exceeds this, we schedule a further cohort rather than expanding a group beyond what allows genuine discussion.
No Product Sales
Facilitators are not permitted to promote, recommend, or refer participants to specific financial products or advisers — during or after sessions — as part of any commercial arrangement.
Cohort Feedback
At the close of each programme, participants are invited to submit anonymous written feedback. This feedback directly shapes revisions to the following cohort's materials and structure.
Regulatory Clarity
Mongkol Group is registered as an educational business under Thai law. We are not licensed as a securities firm or investment adviser, and we make this clear in all programme materials.
Financial Education for the Adult Learner in Bangkok
Financial literacy for adults over 40 occupies an unusual position in Thailand's educational landscape. Most formal courses address beginners — people who have not yet accumulated savings, not yet dealt with property inheritance, not yet navigated retirement planning within a Thai family structure. Our programmes address a different question: how does a person who already manages money develop a more considered relationship with the financial world around them?
The three programmes offered by Mongkol Group approach this from distinct angles. The market history programme treats long-run data as a subject worthy of patient reading — not as a tool for prediction. The household case study workshop asks participants to sit with realistic, anonymized examples and find what they recognize. The almanac programme builds a habit of personal observation over six months.
Adults who have worked through two or three economic cycles bring something to these sessions that younger learners cannot: they have experienced the distance between what financial commentators said would happen and what actually did. Our approach respects that experience and tries to build on it rather than replace it with a new set of formulae.
